Screen Printing Crash Course

It’s All in the Process

This technique is the most crisp and dependable printing method, and is usually used for higher quantities of 24+ pieces. Gradients, textures, and imagery can all be replicated through screen printing. Learn more about the process below!

Will it Work for Me?

With so many style options, this method of printing can be used in nearly any case. If you have a deadline approaching or need lots of shirts, screen printing is the best way to go as we can rush the order without compromising quality.

Step One: Preparing the Design and Screen
Once a design is created and approved, we print it out onto a transparent acetate film. Then, the acetate film is laid onto a screen that has been lightly coated with light-reactive emulsion that hardens under bright light. After exposure, the parts of the screen uncovered by the design are carefully rinsed off the screen, leaving a clear imprint of the design where the ink will pass through.

Step Two: Perfecting the Screen for Printing
After the screen has been rinsed and dried, we make sure that every detail is correct and make any corrections we need to make it as close to the original design as possible. This screen will be the stencil used for printing on each item. Next, our perfected stencil is placed on the printing press with the garment underneath on the printing board.

Step Three: Pressing Ink Through to the Apparel
Here’s where the magic happens! The screen is pressed down onto the item secured to the printing board. Ink is poured on one end of the screen in a gloopy pile. Then, a squeegee is used to push the ink across the screen, passing through the screen onto the garment in the right areas of the design. After the product is dried and double checked, your design is ready for the world!

NOTE: Multiple Colors Mean Multiple Screens!
Screen printing is done with one layer of ink at a time- this means that if you have multiple ink colors, multiple screens must be created to ensure each color goes in the right spot. This does result in additional cost. Check out our FAQ section  to learn more.

Don’t See What You Need?

Have something special in mind? We have a few tricks up our sleeves! If you want something that you do not see below, contact our team and we’ll find a style that works for you.

Single Color Prints

This method can save you money while still being every bit as interesting as multicolor designs. Our team can work with you to make a one color masterpiece.

Black and White Prints

If you have a photo or image you would like to have printed in black and white or grayscale, we’ve got you covered!

Multicolor Prints

Using multiple colors is an easy way to bring life to your artwork. Typically, these designs are spot color or vector prints done without blends or gradients.

Printing on Dark Garments

Light colors on dark garments can be a great way to make your design pop visually. It’s important to know that printing on dark garments requires a white base underneath so that the colors will show up on the dark garment, which can cost extra.

Vintage and Distress Printing

Usually to make colors bright, two base coats of white are placed underneath, but for a vintage look, a single base coat of white is used. The result is a worn look (see first example below). Distress patterns like the examples below are a great way to add breathability to a solid print, though exact patterns are not guaranteed and can vary from the proof to the print.

Full Color Halftone Printing

Also known as Simulated Process printing, this technique is used when to print photos, blends, gradients, or glows onto the shirt. This is different from simple multicolor printing because it uses halftones, or little dots to create the illusion of shading and highlighting.
